Related by Ah Chimal, the eldest son of Gonzalo Guerrero and the Maya Princess Ix Zazil, this novella follows Chimal and his two younger brothers as they carry on their father's legacy of defending Maya lands from Spanish conquistadors during the early 1500s.

These three men are considered by historians to be the first Mestizo (Hispanic or Latino) people born in Mexico.

The brothers' crusade takes them from Mexico's southern Yucatan to Honduras and Guatemala as they battle with Spanish soldiers and native allies.

Ah Chimal eventually rises to become overlord of the Chetumal region and ultimately leads his people to another life in a new land.
